Elective Africa PART 1/3

This post is coming very very late. I was supposed to write this in August but I kept postponing it for some unknown reason. Anyway, here we are.
I found out about Elective Africa from some friends who went to Kenya through Elective Africa. I knew right away that I wanted to go to Kenya after hearing all their amazing stories and challenges as well. I contacted the admin, applied and I was ready to go to Kenya.
To be honest I didn't know what to expect as I knew I was going into a totally new environment ,  to meet a lot of new people and my social skills not being the best. People think that because I'm Nigerian, Kenya shouldn't be that far off culturally, but there's a lot of ways we differ. The way we think, dress, talk, the languages we speak (except English of course) are different and if I have to pick one thing we have in common, it is the colour of our skin. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to build a divide where none is needed, all I'm saying is people shouldn't assume. Just because its Africa doesn't mean everywhere is the same.
Anyway, I packed my bags and after a 5 hour flight to Addis Ababa and another 2 hour connecting flight to Nairobi, I was in Kenya. Wohoooo. I arrived very early in the Morning and had to wait at the airport for the first flight to Mombassa. I have to commend 'Elective Africa' because their agent in Nairobi called 'Flavia' kept me company at the airport till it was time to board my flight to Mombassa. I felt special and very welcomed.

Events of the day (1st Oct)!!!!!

The Independence celebration started on friday (30 sept). Someone had the idea to make T-shirts with the Nigerian map on it inscribed with any words of your choice. People ask if there is anything worth celebrating and I say I choose to be patriotic of my country and they should learn to do the same even if it is for just one day of the year.

Independence day was was a fun filled day. There was a mini football tournament for the guys and ladies as well. I think the Nigerian female team was called 'Koko strikers' and i have no idea the name of the other team. Anyway Koko strikers lost to the opposing team by 7-1,  but we were so glad when they scored their only goal. All in all it was fun to watch the match. Congrats to all who played yesterday.

Happy Independence day NIGERIA!!!!!!!!!!!

Today October 1st marks the 51st anniversary of Nigeria's Independence. Nigeria is a country with about 150 million people. It comprises of 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) where the seat of power is. It has a very rich but also very diverse culture, from the North to the South, from the East to the West, the people all differ in their culture which is what in my opinion make Nigeria very unique.
Today Nigeria is synonymous with a lot of things, corruption, fraud, just to name a few. After years, decades of failed leadership, the country is still far from where it is expected to be.
Despite all these, one thing that make Nigerians who we are is HOPE. We haven't given up on our country, not just yet.
"Nigeria may not be the greatest country in the world, but it is where we call home, the experiences we've had cannot be traded for anything" (Tessy) and for that we are proud to be called Nigerians.

So, Happy Independence day Nigeria
Proudly Nigerian.
Cheers!!!!!!!
